Éditions Lemerre - Fac et spera

    The Story

Éditions Lemerre is the revival of one of France's most storied publishing houses—reimagined for a new literary era.

Founded in the mid-19th century by Alphonse Lemerre, the house became the epicenter of the French literary avant-garde. From its original home in the Passage Choiseul, Lemerre famously published the Parnasse contemporain (1866), launching the careers of giants like Paul Verlaine, Leconte de Lisle, and Anatole France. The house's historical motto, Fac et spera ("Do and hope"), and its iconic emblem of the sower, symbolized a commitment to planting the seeds of enduring culture.

Today, that heritage is not treated as a relic of nostalgia, but as a living foundation. The modern Éditions Lemerre is a cultural house built upon two distinct yet deeply connected pillars: Publishing and Librairie Lemerre.

    The Experience

By combining the rigor of a historical publishing house with a contemporary hospitality philosophy, Éditions Lemerre creates a space where literature is not just purchased, but lived.

    The Integrated Café

At the heart of each Librairie Lemerre is a café designed to facilitate conversation and reflection. The café is central to the concept of the "modern salon," encouraging guests to settle into the space rather than simply passing through.

    The Hosting Ethos

Our approach is rooted in the principles of high-end hospitality. The environment is warm, intimate, and service-oriented, providing a sanctuary where the speed of the digital world is replaced by a more deliberate, human pace.

    A Neighborhood Epicenter

Our first flagship is located in Paris's 7th arrondissement, a district with a profound literary history. The space functions as a natural meeting point—where events and daily hospitality create a continuous dialogue between the house, the authors, and the community.

    Literary Discovery

Access to works you won't find anywhere else—forgotten masterpieces restored from the original catalogue and new voices nurtured within the Lemerre ecosystem.

    Deep Editorial Collaboration

We work directly with authors to develop ideas from the ground up, fostering collaborations that span years, not just release cycles.

    The Value

The publishing arm of Éditions Lemerre is anchored in a dual mission that honors the past while decisively shaping the future. Librairie Lemerre manifests these values in physical space.

    Restoring the Canon

Readers gain access to masterpieces long out of print—works that defined the 19th-century intellectual landscape, meticulously restored and recontextualized for the modern age.

    Primary Creation

Collectors discover truly original works—books born within the Lemerre ecosystem that cannot be found anywhere else, offering unique literary voices unfiltered by translation.

    Intellectual Coherence

Every title you encounter reflects a distinct literary identity—a curated catalogue built for meaning and long-term relevance, not volume or trend.

    A Living Cultural Home

Visitors find not a store, but a sanctuary—a place where reading becomes part of a richer experience of connection, conversation, and cultural belonging.

    The Modern Salon

Guests experience literature as it was meant to be lived—surrounded by thoughtful hospitality, meaningful dialogue, and a community of kindred spirits.
